Fraser Valley RPG > Science Fiction > Giant Robot campaign

That's right, I am back for a limited time only to run a game I have been thinking about for a long time.

Genre: Giant Robots (think anime styled mecha)
System: Warhammer Fantasy Role Play % system modded for this game.
Players: 3-4max
Occurrence: Weekly, Wednesday @ 6:30 in Mission.
Starting: Wednesday the 15th for character and setting creation
Runtime: 3 Months estimated.

The deal with this game is that it should be cool and fun, and since everyone has their own ideas about the genre we are going to hash out the particulars together during setting creation. Think about how the mecha are powered, where they came from, what sort of political situation you want to start with. Are there aliens? Is it even on Earth? Will we go to space? All these questions must be answered collectively and in doing so we will all be on the same page.

Notes on gameplay:
Two profiles: Pilot Profile and Mecha Profile
Weapon Skill, Ballistic Skill and Agility transfer from the Pilot for use with the mecha but are limited by the mecha's listed max.
Skills: Pilot Specific, pretty much all non-combat.
Talents: Mixed between Pilot Talents and Mecha traits, often won't transfer to use with Mecha
Equipment: Mostly Mecha-based. Built in weapons require energy and reduce armour strength.
Movement: Still up in the air, we'll talk.

Sadly I got the flu, so here's hoping I am better by Wednesday.

Given how things tend to derail IRL, maybe it would be prudent to try to get some (though not all) of the details ironed out here?

True, getting you guys to task is like herding cats.

I'll write up the survey here and then everyone can have more time to think about it, and I'll get a few basic Mecha profiles ready, are there typically the standard 4 archetypes: Long Range, Brute Force, Fast Recon, and Comm/Support? Like Archer, Fighter, Thief, and Mage.

I like the idea of chinese food. 2014 has been off to a great start in terms of climbing out of the pit that was 2013, so I can contribute to that.

Depends on culture and origin. Can't remember for sure, but I think we went for a techbological development origin, making for a name that would be related to their purpose. On the other hand various other things such as how extravegant the nobility is, and what language group our little country belongs to.

Let's see standards are.

A.M.W.S. (Assault Maneuver Weapon System, pronounced "aims")
Arm Slaves
Heavy Frames
Mobile suits

Questions about how humanoid they look also matter
If they come in a wide variety of appearances they might need to distinguish.
eg in Gundam they have mobile weapons;humanoid ones are mobile suits, and the others are mobile armours (I believe).

Then there is the closest thing we have today.

I tried thinking of a good Acronym, but was unsuccessful.

I'm open to having all types dependent on use of course. I've always like the practical term "frame", especially considering that in meta knowledge what we are using as a template, ie the mecha profile sheet, could be called a frame too.

I'll suggest:
LSF - Light Scout frame
MAF - Medium Asault frame
HBF - Heavy Battle frame etc.

So the light, medium, and heavy would stay constant as well as the frame aspect, but the role could be switched out to whatever the mecha is intended for. Of course I think each culture/power would have a different way of going about this, and I like the idea of actually naming the machines too.

This is what you guys are likely going to start in:
LSF -Rand mkIII

Also I want to institute a special rule for combat scenarios, each of you are to select a theme song, no more than 6 minutes long, that you feel will fit your character and his fighting style. Each other participant in any battle will also have a theme song, and depending on which song is playing on a random loop that character will have a certain bonus.

I think that due to the nature of heavy armour + more armaments the frame would be heavier as well. Don't you think?

Ideally not, the square cube law and all.
But I don't want to get into the science of it it's more of a gameplay setting thing.
I just really don't want to see it be a now you have a better mech; it's bigger taller. With exceptions of a few mechs that are supposed to be exceptional in a given show mechs tend to all be about the same size.
It also doesn't feel likely that the military would be likely to take us, who they have spent lots of money training in LSFs, and then tell us now you are piloting HBFs if there was a large difference between them.

I agree with Chrono's sentiments. It would make sense to have people trained for the medium level of Mech and then specialize from there. It would be good to potentially see Light Mechs as something that an experienced pilot would actually use rather than just the first in a line of stepping stones to the biggest, heaviest, most gun-laden pile of metal on the continent.

For light mechs, think of them as a specialization rather than a tiny mech. You want something that can run, or possibly even fly, circles around other mechs. While you would have an emphasis on being lightweight, you'd need to give it at least a medium range weapon with which to defend itself. Instead of packing heavier weapons, a Light mech would ideally make use of differing suites of utility gear such as mines, cloaking devices, hacking tools, and advanced recon and communications equipment.

A LSF would also be the go-to choice for a sniper, if you focus most of the load capacity on carrying a high quality long range weapon. A Scout mech would allow a sniper the extra time and maneuverability to set up a good position, again while not making himself an excessively big target.

MAFs should be the standard class that would be trained with initially, though I could see training with cheaper MAF's with a fairly generic suite of weapons initially, and then having the higher quality MAF's going into closer range combat.

I want to clarify I don't have issue with the HBF > MAF > LSF. I only have a problem with that if they are vastly different in size or operation. From an economic standpoint it makes sense to have cheaper ones that are just not as good. I only have an issue with the gradient if the mechs themselves are very different, in size or operation, which is why I envisioned power output as being the biggest difference, a bigger engine, makes the mech better no matter what it's role.

Ah. Okay. My argument was more that a light mech should still be valid as an option on the battlefield. I remember from my days of playing the Mechassault games for the Xbox that you could destroy mech classes much heavier than your own using a tiny scout mech by outmaneuvering them.

Our rpg universe is free to diverge from this, of course, but I like it as a bit of a balancing mechanic.

There won't be a big discrepancy in size, not enough to make it matter if these things were drawn out to scale. I think weight would be the one factor I am ok with having variation in. Thicker armour = more weight, but bigger powerplant = "it doesn't matter". As for size I think aside from potential drones being much smaller, and mobile artillery frames being much larger, the mechs with single pilots will all be about the same size. I think there would definitely be a minimum size for the sorts of systems required to run one of these things.

Anyway, you are all starting in identical frames. And could someone bring drinks (non-pop is ok) and could someone also bring a good range of pencil crayons? My set has only 6 usable colours.

We'll eat chili, do character and party creation, and then start in on the first session I have mapped out.

Skill changes so far:

Evaluate -> Analyze (more of a situational skill now than mercantile)
Haggle -> Negotiate (gets the setting feel right)
Row, Ride, Swim and Run -> Athletics (one skill to rule them all)
Channeling -> Hacking
Animal Charm, Animal Handling, and Animal Care -> Animal Training
Follow Trail -> Tracking
Trade -> Craft -> Technical Knowledge
Navigation -> Orienteering
Hypnotism, Lip Reading, Sail, Sleight of Hand, Ventriloquism -> Special Skills (not that these wouldn't be useful, but I don't want to have a line for each of them if nobody takes them, each is its own skill)
Silent Move + Shadowing -> Stealth (advanced skill)

Added: Recollection(basic skill)

Trick: What is your Theme Song?
Any of those three options for food work for me.

And how does this look for the standard ejection pod survival pack (for the part of the Confederacy that you are in at least)

Even though you will be in trainers at the beginning I think the packs are standard. You should never have to actually eject out of the trainer anyway, but in the extreme situation where you would, you might need that many rations, or your frame just overheated and blew up.

Food thoughts? I'm fine with whatever you guys decide, but perhaps order it to pick i up on your way out. Jacelyn and I were talking about it too, and because we are saving for our trip in the summer I don't always want to dish out 10+ $$ each week. She offered to help do food prep and have a rotating list of 4 meals if you guys don't mind? They'd probably weigh in at about $5 each on I'd say. Any preferences? We want easy to make things.

Skill holes for the squad are: Analyze, Disguise, Gamble, Negotiate, Recollection, Hacking, Performer, Pick Lock, Prepare Poison, Torture, and any special skills.

I will possibly allow additional skills before we start to cover the most problematic holes in the advanced skills list, as they can't be used unskilled.

Sorry. Spots with both numbers and arrows assigned have been raised by the number of arrows beside them. skills with arrows, but no number value haven't recieved any training. Stars ( I think) denote a talent bonus in certain conditions. I'm guessing there will be a few points freed up now that some of the skills have been consolidated.

I will allow each of you to chose a different skill from the list of 'missed' skills @ 1 rank free. Each of you will also get to increase two different attributes by 2. I'm doing this instead of the standard +5 since there are no class limiters in place and I want growth to be more gradual and even.

In process, but I just can't seem to remember the full list of basic skills which I need to add to the character sheets.

The hijacked Curupira XS is done though.
I also can't find Trick's or Greg's character sheets, so if you guys brought those home I'll modify them when you get here, if not then I can figure the upgrades with you from the originals.

session tomorrow. We are having spaghetti and meatballs. Chrono, do you want to try it with vermicelli or plain ol rice? Would people be interested in doing sukiyaki next week? It's a bit more on the pricey end, but I think split 5 ways it would come to equal or less than pizza still.

And Shabu Shabu looks to be pretty spot on $9 per person split 5 ways. Well it's closer to $10 a person, but there will be leftover bok choi and maybe some meat. So $9!

So I just got curb-stomped by work today, just woke up from my recovery nap here, 103 calls today, likely no improvement tomorrow. What that does is take away any bit of energy I have for planning and running a session. But I still have the evening free and I still want to hang out with all of you and eat chilli.

So how about games night at my place? I have a pirate game I've wanted to try out for a while (was cheap so could be hit or miss) and I think if Chrono brings that Japanese journey game that'd be cool if it fits 5 players. And I'd like to play Smallworld or Carcassonne too. I don't often get to play those with 5. Does this work? Same bat time, same bat channel.

Cool Beans, Unfortunately Redeadlink has a family dinner that has him engaged so it will be a regular games night, I hope Chrono told you trick. I would like to try some two player games of PotCS, which if I am correct should run pretty quick once we pick fleets.

Elk mountain is pretty casual. It's about twice the length of the so-called Abby Grind, and most of the trail a fair bit easier. The Internet tells me to expect 4 hours car-to-car and 674 m of elevation. There might be some snow further up and if things become too difficult we will turn around.

Edit: also, I like the movie Friday idea.

I don't particularly know how to fry tomatos, I am assuming in a frying pan with heat for a start.

Can't do Elk mtn. today unfortunately. It took a friend and I 2 hours to the top in January with snow and tents and food etc. And I took a few naps on the path on the way. No lie.

Friday might not be a go yet. There is a lot of garden work I need to do. I'll know after this evening.

I hope you get better quickly Greg. Sucks to be out of work, and the subsequent money it affords you.

I have an announcement about this week's session. It will not happen. Last week it turned out that Jacelyn and I went 7 days straight without spending quality one on one time together. Not that the RPG was the cause of that at all, but for this week with her studying for her final, and me building the Lego display for July short notice it is the easiest thing to postpone to get an evening together to hang out. So we will reconvene in July on the 3rd for the next robot session.

Incidentally we stopped by that new games shop in downtown Abby on Sunday and they are doing open board games nights on Thursdays. So I would recommend you guys who are still available head down and check that out and then report back to the rest of us and maybe we could make that a regular activity.

Though if you do need to contact me, for anything other than the address, you are probably doing it wrong cause I will have nothing to do with you getting there.

Important Announcement!

Since we are right between the second and third arc of the storyline (the final one) and since I am going away relatively soon I have decided to postpone all sessions until my return. Tentatively that means our next session will be September 4th. This is because we are also going away this weekend and then next weekend will be busy with packing and getting last minute stuff together and planning a session and a meal each week takes a goodly chunk of my time. It will also prevent a long gap mid-arc.

I'll try to text all of you this info as well, but post here if you have read it.

I would agree with you Trick, but for the fact that I have already made a decision. The leader of our Lego club has gone on indefinite hiatus leaving me and the other member of the executive in charge of everything where before we had very little say. This is a big positive for us. But we have our biggest event of the year coming up in a month and due to lack of leadership we are only now getting rolling. I have decided, with my wife's full approval, to hold off on finishing up the robots campaign until after the show. The stress level would be too high for me and I'd get grumpy, and you guys would have a lower quality game than I would want to give you.

I would like to start up again for the full final swing in the last week of October. We will figure out days when we get closer to that time.

So I have had some ideas of how the giant robots campaign could continue.
I was waiting for Jimbo to post an epilogue but that hasn't happened.

The basic idea is for the campaign to take place 5-8 years in the future.
The dominant conflict would be between mankind and the ghosts.
Other internal conflicts between the three main factions:
Luddite faction that wants to shun all technology and hide.
Ascension faction that wants to accept assimilation with the Ghosts.
Humanist faction that wants to fight and defend humanity as it is.

I would have some questions for people before I ran this though

1) How much do you want taking place in space?
2) How much combat do you want how much talky talky?
3) How much do you want to play or original character?
4) How much do you want to have current characters continue to exist?
5) How much do you want to fill in the skipped years? How much left unsaid?

Other stuff:
The campaign would still be run on Wednesdays probably at my place.
It would probably be shorter than the original.
Characters would be rescaled to starting out at level 1

If it is possible to come back as my original character through the introduction of a new renegade ghost faction, that would be cool. Maybe pose the question of whether I actually am rebellious, or if I'm programmed to think I am as a form of sleeper agent.

Even if Wildcard can't come back as a player character, it would be cool to see our characters as Veteran NPC’S or even villains.

5) How much do you want to fill in the skipped years? How much left unsaid?

Have important political stuff explained, but save revealing cool things about old characters for fun reveals, unless it's common knowledge.
